General James B. McPherson Home
Clyde’s Famous Civil War Hero
“Highest Ranking Union Officer”
Killed in the Civil War
General James B. McPherson (1828-1864) was born and raised in Clyde and graduated first in his class from West Point Academy.
Built in 1833, the boyhood home of General James B. McPherson celebrates the life and accomplishments of the “Highest Ranking Union Officer” killed in the Civil War. On display is the sword he wore when he was mortally wounded while leading his troops in the Battle of Atlanta. A statue honoring him stands on the cemetery grave opposite the home.
An OHS marker recognizes the home and the cemetery as important Ohio locations to visit!
