GREAT STRIDES is the CF Foundation’s largest fund-raising event. It gives a chance for all people in the community to get involved forming teams through their workplace, clubs and organizations or with friends and family. Walk day is a fun, family-friendly celebration that is a healthy 2 ½ mile walk, refreshments, and festivities that participants look forward to year after year. The 2010 Great Strides New Braunfels walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Schlitterbahn Water Park. Registration is at 8:00 A.M. and the walk begins at 9:00 A.M. The first 250 people to register online and raise a minimum of $40 will receive a FREE pass to remain at Schlitterbahn after the walk has concluded. We invite people in the community to form a walk team and to join us in the fight to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Register and begin fundraising today at http://www.cff.org/Chapters/lonestar/GREATSTRIDES/ For more information, please contact the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Lone Star Chapter at 210-829-7267 or email Brandy at [email protected]. Lone Star Chapter 8620 North New Braunfels, Ste110 Phone 210-829-7267 Fax 210-829-4204 San Antonio, TX 78217 Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 35,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: – Clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and – Obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their late 30s, 40s and beyond. This has all come about from the support of events like the Great Strides walk. “Because of risks to people with cystic fibrosis (CF), individuals with a confirmed positive sputum culture for Burkholderia cepacia complex shall not attend this event. This is because B. cepacia can be passed between individuals who have CF through close proximity. B. cepacia infection in a person with CF can cause serious respiratory illness and, in some patients, may lead to death. Despite this policy, there might still be some individuals with B. cepacia in attendance. B. cepacia is not a risk for otherwise healthy individuals. For alternative ways to participate and for information about this policy, please contact the CF Foundation at (800) FIGHT-CF or visit our Web site at www.cff.org. Consult your CF care center physician with medical questions.”
