Stephens County Historical Museum

category : Museums
Stephens County Historical Museum The Stephens County Museum, located at the old National Guard Armory, was accepted into the National Registry of Historic Places in the Spring of 1997.

Visiting the museum can transport you back into a simpler
time; you can literally "step" into Grandma's kitchen or the family dentist's office. See authentic room vignettes filled with treasured antiques, memorabilia, and other artifacts depicting pioneer life in Oklahoma.

One extensive display shows our Native American Heritage in an original setting with an exceptional arrowhead collection. Whether your interest is early-day photography, music, crafts, Indian lore, farming, or machines, the Stephens County Historical Museum can satisfy your curiosity in charming fashion. Exploring the adventures of the past is just a step away.

Other major features of the Stephens County Historical Museum include: County
photography dating from 1892, with many pictures of Stephens county people, most of which have been identified; area archeological samples; store and gift shop; pioneer drug store; blacksmith shop; legal and medical offices of the era; and records and photography of that now almost vanished phenomenon, the one-and two- room rural schoolhouses that have virtually disappeared from the American landscape. At one time Stephens County had 95 independent school districts. This record of early schools has drawn more interest - primarily from present and former county residents -- than any other exhibit.

On The Chisholm Trail Statue

Oklahoma's largest bronze sculpture (16' high and 35" long) stands in Duncan, adjacent to the museum. The sculpture shows a chuch wagon followed by longhorn cattle on the move northward. Cowboys are intent on the herd. Of interest to young observers is the trail dog trotting alongside.
