Central East
Central East Florida runs along the Atlantic coast in the middle stretch of the state, the barrier-island and lagoon country from Daytona Beach south through the Indian River and Treasure Coast to Stuart’s edge. The terrain is mostly flat — sandy barrier islands, salt-marsh estuaries, and the long Indian River Lagoon running parallel to the ocean inside the islands — with Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral concentrating most of the regional landmark traffic. Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee counties cover the region. Anchor cities include Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Vero Beach, and Port St. Lucie. Kennedy Space Center and Canaveral National Seashore sit in Brevard; Daytona International Speedway anchors Volusia; Lake Okeechobee defines the southwestern edge. Most trips split by purpose. Daytona Beach handles the speedway-and-surf itinerary; the Space Coast at Cocoa Beach and Titusville carries launch-watching and the Visitor Complex at Kennedy; Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast pull a quieter beach-and-citrus crowd. Spring and fall offer the most reliable weather; hurricane season runs June through November.
