Greater New Haven
Greater New Haven covers New Haven County in south-central Connecticut, anchored by the city of New Haven on Long Island Sound. The terrain runs from the trap-rock ridges and basalt cliffs of West Rock and East Rock down to a flat coastal plain along the Sound, with the Housatonic and Quinnipiac rivers cutting through and a stretch of working harbor at New Haven itself. New Haven is the dominant anchor — Yale University, the New Haven Green, and the New Haven pizza scene that has shaped Italian-American food in the Northeast. Other towns include Waterbury, Meriden, Milford, West Haven, Hamden, Branford, Guilford, Madison, and Cheshire. Sleeping Giant State Park and East Rock Park hold the in-city hiking; Hammonasset Beach State Park anchors the eastern shoreline. Most trips build around two threads. Yale handles the cultural-museum itinerary — the Beinecke Rare Book Library, the Peabody Museum, the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale Repertory Theatre. The shoreline towns from Branford east to Madison run lobster shacks, antique shops, and the Sound’s protected swimming beaches. Pizza is its own day trip — Pepe’s, Sally’s, Modern.
