Pony Express Territory
Pony Express Territory covers the central swath of Nevada along the original Pony Express route, the broad basin-and-range country running from Fallon east past Eureka and Ely to the Utah line. The terrain is classic Great Basin — long sagebrush valleys, sharp mountain ranges, and the high country of the Schell Creek and Snake ranges that climb above 13,000 feet at Wheeler Peak. US 50 — the Loneliest Road in America — runs the length of the region. Four counties cover the region. White Pine holds Ely (the largest town, with the Nevada Northern Railway and the Ward Charcoal Ovens); Churchill holds Fallon and the Naval Air Station that hosts Top Gun training; Eureka holds Eureka itself (a well-preserved 19th-century mining town); Lander holds Battle Mountain and Austin. Great Basin National Park (with Lehman Caves, Wheeler Peak, and the bristlecone pine groves) sits in the southeastern corner. Most trips here run road-trip and dark-sky focused. Great Basin National Park draws the largest single-stream visitor traffic — Wheeler Peak summits, Lehman Caves tours, dark skies; the Nevada Northern Railway runs steam-and-diesel excursions out of Ely; the Loneliest Road across US 50 functions as its own multi-day itinerary.
