Trails West Region

The Trails West Region covers the western panhandle of Nebraska, the rolling High Plains and dramatic bluff country where the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails converged along the North Platte River in the mid-19th century. The terrain shifts from flat short-grass prairie to the abrupt sandstone formations of Scotts Bluff, Chimney Rock, and Courthouse and Jail Rocks — the landmarks pioneer wagon trains used to navigate the High Plains. Five counties cover the region. Scotts Bluff holds Scottsbluff and Gering, the largest urban area; Cheyenne holds Sidney and the Cabela’s flagship store; Deuel holds Chappell; Garden holds Oshkosh; Banner holds Harrisburg. Scotts Bluff National Monument (with the Oregon Trail wagon ruts and the bluff itself rising 800 feet above the North Platte) and Chimney Rock National Historic Site anchor the trail history; Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area covers the Wildcat Hills’ pine-and-canyon country; Lake Minatare and Box Butte Reservoir handle water recreation. Most trips here run pioneer-trail focused. Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock draw the largest single-stream visitor traffic; Sidney’s Fort Sidney Complex and the Sidney walking tour fill cultural visits; the Wildcat Hills’ Cedar Canyon and the Riverside Discovery Center in Scottsbluff round out outdoor days.
