Established in 1865, Washburn University is one of Topeka's greatest assets and is the only municipal university in the nation. The 160 acre campus features modern facilities and state-of-the-art technology. The university provides broad based liberal arts and professional education through more than 180 educational programs and continuing educational opportunities. Many Topekans take advantage of the university's convenient evening course offerings. With 6,000 students and 1,000 employees, Washburn contributes approximately $100 million per year to the local economy.

With an attractive and modern campus, the university is home to many special events, festivals and concerts. The campus is host to the Mulvane Mountain/Plains Art Fair, Sunflower Music Festival, and numerous other cultural activities and sporting events throughout the year. The Mulvane Art Museum, White Concert Hall, Andrew J. and Georgia Neese Gray Theatre, the Bradbury Thompson Center, Lee Arena, and Moore Bowl are frequent hosts to activities, performances, and events open to the entire community.
