This is the home of Socialist lawyer, author, and lecturer, Henry Laurens Call. Call built the first airplane west of the Mississippi River in 1908. It was called the "Girard Airship", dubbed by the townspeople as the "Mayfly" because, "it may fly!" It didn't. Call built fourteen planes in all.
Drop by an see one of the nation's largest American Flags (30' x 60' - 130' high). While you can see the flag from your vehicle, you really must stand under the Big Flag to appreciate its true size, 130 feet high above the Kansas prairie honoring all war veterans.

Girard, KS MemorialsWinson Park was given to the people of Girard by Mr. J.E. Raymond. The Park has a swimming pool, playground equipment and picnic shelters.
Girard, KS City ParksThe oldest grave marker in the cemetery is of Mary Frances Crawford. The friends of Historic Girard has placed a new monument at this sight. Dr. Strong is buried here, along with many founding family names. It is worth a walk around to see how many you can see.
