Glencoe Mill Village

category : Other Attractions
This village consists of a cotton mill complex and associated worker housing community, and was built on a 105-acre site along the Haw River between 1880 and 1882. The mill was developed by two sons of Edwin M. Holt, the most influential textile pioneer in the South in the nineteenth century. Glencoe remains one of the best preserved mill villages in North Carolina, providing a comprehensive picture of the social and commercial organization of a late 19th century water-powered southern cotton mill village. The property is on the study list for national historic landmark status. The village is currently under restoration - drive-by visitation is welcomed. Property is owned by Preservation North Carolina.
