Annual Mary E. Hill Day

The Committee for Mary E. Hill Day presents its annual celebration, Saturday, 2:00-5:00 p.m.

Through the benevolence of the Jefferson County SCLC Chapter, Mary E. Hill was honored on August 29, 2009 at their inaugural banquet as one of the Mothers of the Jefferson County Civil Rights Movement. A refuge for the Jefferson County Civil Rights workers during 1970-1975, Mary E. Hill as owner of Hill Town Tavern served the needs of the people. A “Mary E. Hill Day” Resolution was bestowed upon her for being the only Black business (Hill Town Tavern) in downtown Louisville during that historical time by former Mayor Rita Culver. Following the passing of Mary E. Hill in October 2009, the Annual Mary E. Hill Day was launched August 2010 by her surviving children. In memoriam, each year a day of family and friends in honor and celebration continues to give tribute for the mark Hill made in sharing with, and caring for “the people.”

The community is invited to join for a day of food, song, fellowship and reflections. Highlights include guest speakers, presentations, this year to highlight Social Justice with recognizing women of the movement, voting rights, and a community policing "conversation." Plan now to share in a time of celebration in the spirit of Mary E. Hill and Hill Town Tavern. For more information contact the Committee for Mary E. Hill Day by email or phone.
