Sterling, Nebraska

"Small Town - Big Heart" The village of Sterling was founded in 1870 near the Nebraska City-Beatrice Trail. It is located on Highway 41 amid the bountiful farmland of the Nemaha River Valley. It is the birthplace of renowned author, Hal Borland and the Martin Luther Home. Sterling is a thriving community with over 40 businesses offering full services for residents and travelers. It is conveniently centered within short driving distances of Lincoln, Omaha, Homestead National Monument and Indian Cave State Park. Sterling offers overnight camping at the Sterling City Park. On Memorial Day there are patriotic ceremonies at 4 nearby cemeteries. Also a parade and community dinner are held. The Sterling Picnic is held on the second Saturday in July. If features a parade, chicken BBQ, kids tractor pull, car show, ball tournaments and street dance. The Deer Creek Sodbuster Antique Machinery Show is held the second Sunday in August. There are demonstrations of old-time thrashing, blacksmithing, sawmilling, and machinery displays. A flea market, craft show, parade and special event programs are held each year. Food stands are available. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting is held the first Sunday in December. There is also a soup supper and group caroling. Sterling celebrated their 125th anniversary in 1995.
