Fairfield, Texas
Freestone rock in this area gave the county its name, and Fairfield, the county seat, is recognized as a banking, market, and shipping center. A rock quarry, sawmill, lignite coal mining, and oil and gas production contribute to town's economy.
May through July is a fun time to visit the area with acres and acres of peach trees producing delicious peaches. Fruit stands offer delicious fresh fruit along highways during the season. Fairfield Lake State Park with 1,460 recreational acres lies adjacent to Lake Fairfield. Camping, rest rooms with showers, a swimming beach, boat ramp, fishing pier, and fish cleaning shelter are available along with a 4.5-mile hiking trail to primitive a camping area. From November through February the park is home to a number of bald eagles who winter in Texas. The park provides tours by reservation only.
