Jefferson County, OK
This varied range and farm country was once a part of the old Chickasaw Nation (1855-66), then became a part of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation, where stolen Comanche ponies roamed and cattlemen leased range at the rate of 25 cents per head. Opened in 1901, settlers came in, and the region became primarily a farming area.Artifacts of the historic Chisholm Trail that passed through this area can be seen at the Chisholm Trail Museum in Waurika, and learn about the railroad dreams of one of the famed Ringling brothers in Ringling. Waurika Lake, a Corp of Engineers project offers a mecca of outdoor recreation just five miles northwest of Waurika.
