Toronto Lake, KS
Thanks to the Corps of Engineers ---
Toronto Lake is located in the scenic valley of the Verdigris River, just south of the town of Toronto. It lies at the northern end of the Cross Timbers area, which extends through eastern Oklahoma into northern Texas. In Kansas, this region is known as the Chautauqua Hills and has a diversity of habitat for the visitor to explore. The characteristic habitat of the area is upland woodlands on sandstone outcrops dominated by post and blackjack oak, surrounded by terraces of prairie and gently rolling terrain gradually slopping to the water’s edge.
Duck Island and the upper half of the lake (both land and water), have been licensed to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and is managed primarily for public hunting of upland game, waterfowl and deer.
All five park areas at Toronto Lake are part of the Cross Timbers State Park and are operated and managed by the state of Kansas.
This lake virtually gives an open invitation to visitors for picnicking, camping, hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreation. For birdwatchers there are many species of birds native to the area to enjoy.
Available facilities include boat ramps, picnic tables, campsites, swimming beaches, and sanitary facilities.
The community of Toronto is only 5 minutes north of Toronto Point Public use area and 12 minutes from Cross Timbers State Park. Yates Center is 16 minutes and 24 minutes respectively.
