Lake Oahe spans 231 miles from Pierre, the capital of South Dakota, to Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota and is surrounded by mixed grass prairie with trees growing down to the shore in occasional steep draws. Lake Oahe is the 14th-largest man-made reservoir by volume in the world with a storage capacity of 23.5 million acre-feet. People travel from all over the nation to participate in recreational activities on the 461,000 acres of land and water that comprise the project. The surrounding area is rich in historic sites - fort, trading posts, and Lewis and Clark campsites.

The 2,250-mile shoreline offers myriad of opportunities to outdoor recreationists with 51 recreation areas located around the reservoir. They include highly developed campgrounds and day use areas, moderately developed areas, and primitive areas. Recreation opportunities at the lake include camping, picnicking, fishing, hunting, boating, water skiing, swimming, bird-watching, hiking, biking, and photography. Special fishing and hunting activities are held each year for the disabled.
