A Road to Treasure Seeking the riches of the Seven Cities of Cibola, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado followed this route through eastern Arizona in 1540. When you visit the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway today, you're sure to find treasures of a different kind. The 123 mile scenic highway is full of curves and captivating views of rugged terrain that runs parallel to the Arizona - New Mexico border. Along with vistas that stretch for miles are friendly communities, an abundance of recreational opportunities, and wildlife. This scenic variety is due to the elevation change of more than 6000 ft. along the route.

When traveling this region of Greenlee County sightseers, hiker, anglers, and hunters will find themselves far from crowds and traffic. The Coronado Trail's slow winding road takes you through the Apache-Sitgreaves Forest from Clifton to Alpine or vice-a-versa.
