Tour guides recall the army fort construction that brought George Davenport to Rock Island on the Mississippi (now home to the Rock Island Arsenal) in 1816. Davenport developed a prosperous fur trade with local American Indians and in 1833 constructed the Federal-style mansion that is the centerpiece of the present-day museum site.
