Cowley County Historical Society Museum
category : Museums
The Cowley County Historical Society Museum is housed in one of Winfield's original schools built in 1886. The native stone building and its historical displays keep local history alive and available to the people.
A variety of artifacts are displayed that help portray the history of the area. Many of these materials are in period rooms such as the doctor's and dentist's offices, an early day classroom, a glass collection, and others.
The museum also houses a library, archives and a genealogy department. Documents of historic value, photos, books and biographical and genealogical records can be found here. Genealogical researchers are welcome.
In the spring of 1990, a building was completed to house a 1931 American LaFrance fire truck owned by the City of Winfield. Firefighters restored the truck; "the first non-chain driven, V-12 fire vehicle delivered west of the Mississippi." Also on display in the Fire Hall No. 1 room is fire related memorabilia including a horse drawn chemical tank and photos of the Winfield Fire Department in action.
