Denton Art Center
category : Arts
The Denton Art Center is the home of the Arkansas City Arts Council. Many exhibits, programs, and classes are held at this Center.
This striking 1914 structure was formerly the residence of the Albert Denton Family. Mr. Denton was a prominent banker in Arkansas City. He and/or his family resided in the home until Mrs. Denton?s death in 1957.
The Denton home itself is indeed handsome with its Italian Renaissance/Prairie influenced exterior and Arts and Crafts interior. Natural materials intrinsic to the Arts and Crafts Movement are found in abundance in this house. The tile and brick living room fireplace, the Craftsman Lights, fabulous oak built-ins in the dining area, extensive interior woodwork and the Silverdale Stone exterior are indicative of that era and philosophy and make the home a fascinating place to visit.
The former public rooms now make elegant settings for the variety of exhibits, events, and receptions that are held at the Denton Art Center. Other areas of the Denton Art Center are used for office space and art classes. The Denton Art Center offers many opportunities for artists and patrons alike.
The Art Council hosts the "Cowley County Stone Bridge Tours" and the two "Exuberant Architecture of Arkansas City" tours.
