Hesston, Kansas

The Dyck Arboretum of the Plains is an outdoor education facility with a unique mission--"to foster an appreciation of the natural beauty of Kansas." This one-of-a-kind purpose is carried out through gardens, displays, and landscape plantings within the Arboretum and through an active educational program. From the first tree planted in 1981, the arboretum has matured into one of the largest native plant gardens in the region featuring more than 1,000 varieties of native and adaptable trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses.

Special horticultural collections are being developed emphasizing native or unfertilized non-native plants. These special collections presently include pines, oaks, viburnums, and lilacs. A dwarf shrub display features species and varieties that are suited to today's smaller home landscapes. Other collections include a Kansas wildflower exhibit, a bird watching area, native turfgrasses, and a lake and island garden.

Self-guided tours are welcome anytime during daylight hours. Guided tours may be arranged for groups of 10 or more persons by calling the office. The facility is also available to rent for special occasions.
