St. George's Episcopal Church
category : Churches
St. George's Church, was consecrated on April 14, 1878. Today you can still see its original fourteen beautiful stained glass windows and the primitive church pews. A magnificent Hinners Pipe Organ, built using oak, maple, cypress, mahogany, walnut, pine and ebony sits in a corner. Its approximately 400 pipes are made of pewter, zinc and wood and range from 3 inches long to 9 feet long. Over 40 species of biblical flora and fauna, butterflies, serpents, beetles, bees, spiders, worms and caterpillars and other insects are painted on the pipes in colors of light blue, burgundy, silver and gold. Outside, in the church yard lie many of the county's early settlers including a 17 year old Civil War officer. The most interesting grave is that of a gentleman who is buried standing up. You are welcome to visit inside the church and to walk the grounds. The church is one of 10 historic sites on the Hyde County Talking Houses and Historic Places driving tour. These sites are equipped with am radio transmitters which you can tune to from the convenience of your car to learn the history of the area. St. George's Church is also on the Historic Lake Landing Landmarks riding tour.
