It was first known as New River Marine Base but later changed and named after Lt. General John Archer Lejeune, commandant of the Marine Corps from 1920 to 1929. It is the East Coast training center of the US Marine Corps that has a complete amphibious training base and is the second largest of its kind in this country. It is also home of the South's largest Naval hospital and the base tour. Pick up a visitors pass and tour brochure at the main gate visitor's center just off Hwy. 24.
