Legendary circular path worn in the ground, where no vegetation grows, located off NC 902. The Devil's Tramping Ground is located in southwestern Chatham County about one and a half miles northwest of Harpers Crossroads. The site has been greatly abused in recent years by some individuals who have visited it and little of the original feature now remains. The person who gave the place its name is unknown. It was a fortunate selection in that it attracts attention and has given the spot much publicity. The tale which developed was to the effect that the Devil was wont to visit the area at night and tread the paths sufficiently to maintain them slick and clean. No conclusive explanation for the origin of this curiosity has as yet been given.
