The focal point of downtown Fayetteville, the Market House was built in 1832 on the site of the old State House, which was destroyed by fire in 1831. Architecturally unique in North Carolina, the Market House is one of the few structures in America to use this town hall-market scheme found in England.
The church was rebuilt in 1832 after Fayetteville's Great Fire of 1831. The structure's most significant features are a wooden truss roof (the only one of its kind in North Carolina), its whale oil chandeliers and its magnificent spire.
