Adjoins Fort Bragg. It is named after First Lt. Harley H. Pope, who was killed in an airplane accident near Fayetteville in 1919. It is a major tactical airlift base of the Tactical Air Command. The 464th Tactical Airlift Wing received the coveted Mackey Trophy for the most meritorious flight of the year in 1965 for its actions in evacuating civilians from the strife torn Republic of the Congo.
