Merrimack, New Hampshire

Merrimack, New Hampshire, is a charming town of approximately 27,000 people nestled along the Merrimack River in Hillsborough County. With a rich history, diverse attractions, and abundant outdoor activities, it offers something for everyone. Merrimack is a one hour commute from Boston, one hour from the seacoast, and one hour from the mountains, placing this thriving community right in the heart of it all.

History

Originally inhabited by the Penacook Indians, part of the Algonquin confederacy, the area was known as "Natukhog" or "Naticook." The name "Merrimack" derives from an Abenaki term meaning "place of strong current" or "sturgeon." European settlers arrived in the late 17th century, and the town was officially incorporated on April 2, 1746. Notably, Matthew Thornton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived and is buried here, with his home and cemetery still preserved .
