About Compass Rose
Compass Rose is a Colgate 26 sloop rigged fiberglass displacement hull fin-keeled sailboat manufactured by Precision Boat Works, Inc. in Palmetto, FL. The vessel is operated as a USCG (United States Coast Guard) 'Uninspected Passenger Vessel' less than 26 feet in length and is registered with the State of New Jersey. The vessel is equipped with a full complement of safety, electronic navigation and communication devices.
The Colgate 26 is designed as an entry-level high performance racing/training sailboat. Performance in this context means technical sailing using a full array of nuanced adjustments to trim sail as a means of achieving maximum boat speed. Although only 25' 8' LOA (length overall), it has numerous lines and equipment that can be used to control and effect changes in sail shape.
About Captain Matthew Carmel
Captain Carmel is USCG licensed as Master Inland Steam or Motor and Auxiliary Sail Vessels of Not More Than 50 Gross Tons and holds a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP). He has a Masters Degree in Environmental Health Engineering and is both a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
Captain Carmel has been sailing for over 30 years in small daysailers or racers such as Jboats, O'Days and Solings and has crewed in various larger cruising vessels such as those manufactured by Hunter, Freedom, Sun Odyssey and Oceanis. He has also participated in an offshore Bermuda race.
He has completed a variety of sail training classes such as US Power Squadron Safe Boating; Sea School OUPV, Master Upgrade, Sail Endorsement and Marine Radio Operator Permit courses; US Sail approved courses on basic sailing, advanced sailing, professional sailing, bareboat cruising and coastal navigation. Captain Carmel also maintains current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and Infant/Child/Adult CPR.
