Wayne National Forest - Marietta Unit
category : Other Attractions
The Marietta unit of your Wayne National Forest is, by many accounts, the gem of the Midwest. This rugged backcountry area of Ohio seems almost to have been bypassed by time. This area of the Wayne includes the accessible full-service Leith Run Campground on the banks of the Ohio River, a scenic byway, and 96 miles of trails.
The Covered Bridge Scenic Byway follows the Little Muskingum River north of Marietta. Along this route are several primitive camping areas, historic sites, and trails. Hunting and fishing are popular sports in the area and canoeing is a favorite pastime on the Muskingum. Bring your own canoe and float under historic covered bridges that have spanned the river for over a century.
The district's trails traverse some of Ohio's most rugged terrain. Unique geologic features such as the Irish Run Natural Bridge, and historic sites like the Ring Mill House make trails on this unit particularly interesting. Horse and mountain bike riders are required to purchase a permit to use the trails and can only use the trails from 4/15-12/15. The forest is open year round and most activities are free.
