Battle of the J.R. Williams

Tamaha is the site of the only civil war naval battle fought in Oklahoma.
- Confederate Indian forces, led by Cherokee Brig. Gen. Stand Waitie, were forced aground and captured the union steamboat, J.R. Williams, with cargo valued at $120,000, on June 15th, 1864.
Southern troops included Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles.
