Island Heritage Festival will unearth many of the authentic African customs and traditions and bring them to life in a 5-day celebration on beautiful James Island. This festival will serve as a homecoming to 300 plus years of culture as never before acknowledged and or celebrated on this Sea Island.
James Island, one of the Sea Islands that dot the coast and surround the peninsular of historic Charleston, South Carolina, is the seat of America?s most authentic African culture. Over 40% of the enslaved Africans who were brought to America came in through the port of Charleston and were routinely settled on its sea islands. Over 300 years of history, culture and traditions brought over from Africa, are buried in the bosoms of their descendants and in the soils of the Sea Islands.
