Mushroom expert Walt Sturgeon will teach us about wild mushrooms during the West Virginia Mushroom Club's Labor Day weekend foray. Held in Greenbrier State Forest.
Program: We will meet in Greenbrier State Forest, at Shelter 2 at 10:00 am. We will teach you how to collect and transport mushrooms and then we‘ll take you on a guided walk to gather mushrooms. Walks will be organized by degree of difficulty, but most mushroom walks proceed slowly and are not arduous, so bring the kids (children under the age of 15 attend for free). After the morning walks, we will meet back at the pavilion to sort and identify the mushrooms collected. If we collect anything edible, we will show you ways to preserve and prepare them and then we’ll cook some of them so you can taste them. Walt Sturgeon will be available to answer your questions and to teach you about the mushrooms we find.
If you would like to bring mushrooms from your local area for identification, please label them with your name, including the habitat (in soil under an oak tree; on decaying wood, etc.) and location (in front of my house in Charleston) and give them to us separately.
Lunch: Please bring something for lunch and something to drink. If you are able to contribute something for others to enjoy, like chips, cookies, or fresh fruit, or anything made with mushrooms, we would appreciate it.
Directions: From Charleston, take I-64 East to Exit 175, White Sulphur Springs, Lewisburg. Make a RIGHT at the end of the exit ramp onto Hart's Run Road go 1 1/2 miles to the Forest entrance. From there, follow signs to the shelters, which are about 1 1/2 miles from the park entrance. We will be in Shelter 2.
Registration: Anybody who was a club member in 2005 is welcome to attend for free.
Nonmembers: The foray fee is $10 per person, or $15 per family. If you join the club when you attend the foray, your fee will be applied towards your annual membership.
To participate, you will have to sign a waiver, releasing the club from liability for just about everything that could possibly happen.
