St. George, Kansas
St. George, Kansas is a small town with plenty of history and charm. Settled in 1886, its original buildings have been restored to their former glory and the streets are lined with small shops and restaurants that give it a nostalgic feel.
The area around St. George offers plenty of outdoor recreation including camping, hiking, fishing and hunting. With plenty of nearby lakes, rivers and streams, fishermen can find a variety of fish including bass, trout and catfish. There are also several wildlife areas for hunting game such as deer, turkey and pheasant.
Hikers have access to plenty of trails that wind through the area's hills and valleys offering beautiful views of the countryside. Campers can choose from several campgrounds with amenities such as fire pits, picnic tables and showers.
St. George is well known for its annual KAWnsas Fest in August that celebrates the town's heritage with crafts, antiques, food and live music. There are also plenty of other events throughout the year including flea markets, car shows and sporting events.
There are several attractions in St. George including the St. George Historical Museum which showcases artifacts from the area's rich history and a replica of a one-room schoolhouse. There's also the St. George Community Park which includes an outdoor amphitheater, disc golf course and playgrounds for children. Other attractions include the St. George Fire Museum which houses old fire engines, and a memorial to fallen firefighters, as well as several statues and monuments honoring local veterans of various wars. And finally, visitors can also explore one of Kansas's most unique historical sites - the St. George Underground Railroad Historic Site where escaped slaves used to hide on their way to freedom.
