Phillipsburg

Phillipsburg celebrated it’s 125th year in 1997 as the county seat of Phillips County. It is settled comfortably into the gentle rolling hills of northern-most central Kansas. The original settlement in 1872 wasn’t quite so peaceful as a bitter war was fought between Kirwin, also claiming the county seat. Kirwin hoped a populated town might swing the vote in their favor, so they built houses and advertised free rent to encourage families to come. However, Phillipsburg still won out because of its central location–even though there were no houses in town at the time.

Phillipsburg is the home of the McDill “Huck” Boyd Community Center. Named in honor of the long-time publisher of the Phillips County Review, the center offers concerts and other live entertainment, as well as providing a regional convention facility. Inside the Center, you’ll find the C&R Railroad Museum, an amazing layout of Lionel model trains.

Phillipsburg celebrates its “Riverless” festival the first week-end in June. The Phillips County Fair is held the last week of July in conjunction with “Kansas Biggest Rodeo” on the first Saturday of August. The rodeo parade through downtown Phillipsburg is a real event.

The Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge and the Kirwin Lake make the area around Phillipsburg famous for its goose hunting and bird watching.
