Established 1872 when the railroad reached town, Ennis was named for Cornelius Ennis, director of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. The original railroad community is today a small city featuring diversified industry and a rich quality of life.
Ennis has preserved many buildings in the historic downtown area, some of which are 110 years or older. Ennis offers antique shopping, lakes, parks, golfing, and several annual festivals, including the National Polka Festival held annually on Memorial Day weekend. Each April, the Ennis Garden Club sponsors the Bluebonnet Trails, one of the oldest wildflower events in Texas, featuring 40 miles of well-marked trails. The annual Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival is held the 3rd weekend of April. Ennis has been designated the "Official Bluebonnet Trail of Texas" and the "Official Bluebonnet City of Texas."
