Horse Pens 40's final bluegrass event brings together top name bands along with aspiring young talent, all eager to play their tunes in the ancient amphitheater located in this historic nature park atop Chandler Mtn.. Designated "The Home of the South's Bluegrass Music" by the Alabama State Legislature, many of the most famous bluegrass musicians have played here, such as Bill Monroe, Charley Daniels, Ricky Scaggs, Lester Flatt, Ralph Stanley, "Doc" Watson, Norman Blake, and many more. Some, such as EmmyLou Harris, Marty Stewart, and Three On A String started their careers here.
Horse Pens 40 is world famous not only for it's bizarre rock formations and its long bluegrass music history, but also for it's native American and Civil War history as well. Its unique rock formations, such as the famous 'slopers', attract an international climbing crowd throughout the cooler months.
The proceeds from this show go to benefit the "Are You OK?" senior citizen support program in the area of Steele/Chandler Mtn., and administered by Steele PD Officer, Joy Ray. It provides important aid and support for seniors who are still living at home, but could use a little occasional help to make it through the tough times. This event also benefits the Chandler Mtn. and the Steele Volunteer Fire Depts. as well.
