Living History - Time Travel through Sedona's Architectural Past
- The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting the next in its Living History speaker series on Wednesday January 9 at 10:00 a..m. at the Museum. Their guest speaker will be Janeen Trevillyan, Sedona Historical Society Historian, who will walk you through . This will be a presentation of historic photos that illustrate the story of Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon’s people - not just our buildings. It is the story of: opportunity - need - outside influences - and the environment. The audience will travel through 100+ years of Sedona's architectural past - from caves to tenthouses, from log cabins to stick-built, and from native red rock to mid-century modern. The story will lay out the origins and drivers of construction and design choices made by our early pioneers and developers - the what & why of the materials & styles they chose - some stories behind Sedona's historic structures and why they have their own unique charm. This history is the foundation of Sedona Style! Trevillyan has served for several years as Historian for the Society and has done research on this topic. She has been recognized for her historic preservation work and named an Arizona Culturekeeper. This is a free event, open to the public, with refreshments. Living History - Is There a Doctor in the House?
- The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting the next in its Living History speaker series on Wednesday February 12 at 10:00 a..m. at the Museum. "Is there a Doctor in the House?" by Dr. Paul Schnur M.D. will be a presentation on the history of early medical care in the Verde Valley. Dr. Schnur will review the development of health care in the Verde Valley beginning in 1866 when the first doctors came with the U.S. Army, and follow its progression to the early days of the Marcus J. Lawrence Hospital now called the Verde Valley Medical Center. He will tell stories of some of the early doctors in the Verde Valley. Dr. Schnur has been on the staff of the Verde Valley Medical Center since 1963 when he started medical practice in Sedona. He practiced general medicine and plastic surgery in the Verde Valley until his retirement. His father Dr. Leo Schnur, M.D. was the first full time medical doctor in Sedona. Dr. Paul Schnur will also discuss his families’ contributions to health care in the Verde Valley starting 68 years ago. This is a free event and open to the public. Living History Talk - 1898 in the West: How the Spanish American War affected AZ and the USA
- The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting the next in its Living History speaker series on Wednesday March 13 at 10:00 a..m. at the Museum. "1898 in the West: How the Spanish American War affected Arizona and the USA" will be the topic, presented by the Arizona Rough Riders Historical Association. When Congress declared war on Spain in late April of 1898, President McKinley authorized the raising of a volunteer regiment of cowboy cavalry from the western territories of Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Indian Territory. This regiment was to go down in history as "Roosevelt's Rough Riders", and figured prominently in the Cuban campaign. Today, Prescott's own "A" Troop of the Rough Riders is a ceremonial and re-enactment unit whose purpose is to honor all American War Veterans and to portray, in an historically accurate way, the life and times of the Arizona Rough Riders. This is a free event, open to the public, with refreshments. Every year, the Sedona Heritage Museum presents a series of Living History talks. Sedona Historic Homes & Sites Tour
- The Sedona Heritage Museum will host a Sedona Historic Homes & Sites Tour on Saturday, April 28, in celebration of Arizona’s centennial.Twelve historic places within the Sedona city limits will be open for tour and interpretation. They range from a homesteader’s log cabin to one of the first homes in the first Sedona subdivision. Native red rock homes built in the 1930s and 1940s will provide an insight into local craftsmen and materials. Special homes never on public tour before include four mid-20th century modern homes, including a home designed by Howard Madole, Sedona’s first architect. Additional stops include the town’s first cemetery where T.C. and Sedona Schnebly are buried, along with our first store, the historic heart of the arts community that began its’ life as a fruit packing shed, and the Sedona Heritage Museum’s historic buildings. “This tour was created to celebrate Arizona’s Centennial and share Sedona’s rich heritage of designated historic Landmarks”, said the City’s Historic Preservation Commission Chair Brynn Unger. Event Chairperson, Beth Lanzoni observes that this is a “rare opportunity to see the historic private homes - some of Sedona’s hidden historic treasures.” The tour sites open at 9:00 a.m. Guests should pickup their tickets, maps and souvenir books at the Museum before proceeding. At 3:00 p.m. after the tour, participants are invited to return to the Museum for a reception, refreshments and a brief speaker program. While the tour is designed to be self-guided, the Museum is offering a luxury van guided tour option. Tickets for the guided tour are limited and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are $25 for the self-guided tour and $35 for the guided tours. Tickets may be purchased over the phone or in person at the Museum. This tour has been recognized by the state as an Official Arizona Centennial Event by the state’s organizing committee. Annual Sedona Artists Open Studio Tour
- This year's tour will again feature a month-long preview exhibition at Kinion Fine Art Vault in uptown Sedona, from April 21 - May 18, including a Reception on Friday, May 1 during First Friday at the Galleries. An Opening Reception with the artists will also be held on the evening of May 1st in the Theatre Classroom of the Art Barn at Sedona Arts Center. Light refreshments will be served and artists will be available to answer questions. On Saturday and Sunday, the all Artists' Studios will be open, free to the public, from 10am - 5 pm. Brochures with maps and brief descriptions of the artists and their art are available online and at various locations in Sedona, including the visitor centers, hotels, motels and B&Bs, and the Sedona Art Center. This is a wonderful opportunity to see artists in their natural environment. Many of the artists will be provide demonstrations, light refreshments and a bounty of eye candy, even for those on a diet. And sometimes a fact ain’t exactly exact when you scrutinize details.” Or, so says award-winning actor, playwright and historian Michael Peach in his new show, highlighting his original cowboy-style poetry. Mike spins tales using jokes, stories, first person narrative, and original poems to explore the colorful history of our state. “If whiskey was their quest, men knew that the best came from Bill’s still outside of Sedona.” But, women of the West aren’t ignored in his new show. “Fashion demands the ultimate price, ranchers wrangle a dragon, a con man rides a tornado, a super-powered horse gets distracted, and a frustrated businesswoman gets a leg up on the law.” Informative and entertaining, Mike’s shows have long been a favorite of university, state and national parks, and historically-oriented audiences. Red Rock Loop History Tours by Sedona Heritage Museum
- The Sedona Heritage Museum will host another round of their popular local history tours, on October 1, 2, and 3, 2015 this time visiting historic sites, homesteads and buildings while following the Red Rock Loop Road. A few tickets remain, but they are selling quickly. 'Red Rock' was what the area around the base of Cathedral Rock was known as long before anyone ever heard of the name 'Sedona.' Tour guide Paul Thompson, grandson of Oak Creek Canyon's first permanent Anglo settler J.J. Thompson, spent his earliest growing up years in Red Rock. Thompson leads these tours every year as a way of sharing his family's long history in the area and as a way to give back to the Museum for their preservation work. The tour will visit the Chavez place, Dumas Ranch, Schuerman-Red Rock Cemetery, Schuerman family homestead house, the Armijo homestead house (on the National Register of Historic Places), ruins of the community's first school (1891), site of an early Oak Creek vineyard and an irrigation flume made of barrels, plus other sites, while hearing stories of the historic themes and people who inhabited this 'original' seat of civilization for our area. Tours are October 1, 2, and 3, from 9 am-noon. Space is limited on the luxury coaches. Sherman Loy Cowboy Cookout
- The Sedona Heritage Museum will host an old-fashioned cowboy cookout dinner on Saturday, October 6 at the Museum. Professional award-winning Dutch oven cook, Grant Smith, grandson of Oak Creek Canyon pioneers Linc and Addie Smith and son of Ira and Elsie Smith, will be serving beef and all the fixin’s, like biscuits, potatoes, beans, dessert and cowboy coffee. The entire meal will be cooked over open fires in old-time cast iron Dutch ovens. Grant learned this style of cooking from family and friends while on the Sedona roundups he grew up at. Annual Pioneer & Community Picnic

Living History Talk & Cemetery Walk
- The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting the next in its 2012 series of Living History presentations on Wednesday October 10, at 10:00 a.m. at their historic Cook Cedar Glade Cemetery, just off Airport Road, next to the Elks Lodge. "Going, Going, Gone - Historic Cook Cemetery Walk", with Sedona Heritage Museum volunteer and Cemetery Committee Chair Ron Maassen. This is the oldest cemetery in the City of Sedona, established in 1918 when a victim of the Spanish Flu epidemic was buried in a little plot. Later, Henry Cook homesteaded 160 acres in Grasshopper Flat that included the site. Mr. Cook eventually set aside an expanded area for use as a cemetery for local settlers. The Cooks sold most of their ranch in the 1950s but retained ownership of the cemetery until 2005 when they deeded it to the Sedona Historical Society. The cemetery is a designated Sedona Historic Landmark. Over the years, members of many early families have been laid to rest in this quiet location, including Henry Elmer Cook (1871-1955) and his wife Effie Tennie Jamison Cook (1876-1946); Jesse Elmer Purtymun (1879-1942) and his wife Maggie Elizabeth Thompson Purtymun (1884-1956);‘Red’ Hedges (1917-1978) a WWII vet and the first KSB Litter Lifter; and T.C. Schnebly (1868-1954) wife Sedona Schnebly (1877-1950) - our town’s first Postmaster and our namesake, and their little daughter Pearl. This is a free event, open to the public. Sedona Heritage Museum Anniversary Open House
- The Sedona Heritage Museum is hosting a free party so the entire community can participate in a celebration of the 15th anniversary of "Sedona's Own Museum". The theme of the open house and party is "Be a Museum Insider for the Day", and is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This free event is planned to be a day for locals and visitors alike to experience the Museum inside and out. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., Sedona's Mayor Rob Adams and other dignitaries will be on-hand for a brief program. Long-time volunteers who helped open the museum will be recognized, as well current volunteers. A special ending to the program will be the unveiling of a new piece of public art at the Museum. After the opening program and sculpture unveiling, the day's activities will begin with a demonstration of the 1940s era mechanized apple sorting machine in the Jordan Fruit Packing Shed. These demonstrations will be held at a variety of times throughout the day. Also, all day, Museum volunteers will be offering a variety of behind-the-scenes activities. Members of the public will be able to assist with a small project in the Restoration Workshop or experience the proper way to archivally store clothing and textiles in a safe Museum-like manner. There will be guided tours inside the Archives and Collections Room itself, along with guided tours of the general Museum. The Museum's digital catalog database system will be running so you can try your hand at a search to view inside the collection of almost 20,000 cataloged items and photos. Docents will be around to answer your questions about most any Museum function, exhibit, program or service. A complete schedule will be posted of special demonstration and tour times. For kids of 'all ages', volunteers will be leading a "make & take" project in the Kids Korral where you can make an old-fashioned cornhusk doll. A corn husk doll is a Native American toy, a doll made out of the dried leaves or "husk" of a corn cob. Making corn husk dolls was adopted by early European settlers in the U.S. and is now practiced as a link to the arts and crafts of our founders. Museum Gift Shop will be offering everyone a 15% discount for just the day. The shop specializes in items made by local artists and crafters and books about local history. They also feature a section of old movies made during the heyday of film-making in Sedona. A special treat will be friends of the Museum who will be firing up their open campfires and baking cowboy biscuits in Dutch ovens over open fires all day. A long-time basic of cowboys and homesteaders, these tender and delicious staples of the trail will be served plain or with a little honey or butter. Nothing like it! Special guests for the day will be many members of Sedona pioneer families who are expected to be in attendance and will be ‘holding court’ in the historic Fruit Packing Shed. Representatives from the Jordan family, the family that built the buildings where the Museum is housed, will be present, including two of the children who grew up in the house. A large contingent of members of the area's fourth permanent family, the Schuerman and Owenby families, are also planning to attend. This will be your opportunity to meet and greet and ask questions about local history and get answers directly from some of those who lived it. The new sculpture at the Museum is a gift from the Red Rock Arts Council (RRAC). The RRAC has been in the forefront of Art in Public Places starting with the sculpture of Sedona in front of the Sedona Public Library. Now they have set their sights on a demonstration of history in its most basic form – story telling. The unveiling of 'Josie' at the morning program will add the life size statue of a pioneer girl at the feet of the 'Story Tellin' Cowboy', a life size bronze set in place last year. With the addition of 'Josie', the planned vignette of three statues will be 2/3 complete. All that is left is a pioneer boy to join 'Josie' while they listen to the cowboy communicating Sedona history and heritage. Just one more way to make this a special day, and as a way for the Museum to say "Thank you" to supporters, a light lunch will be available at noon, for free, until it is gone. Museum's Fall Arts & Crafts Show
- The gift-giving holiday season is fast upon us all. What do we do for those on our list who have everything? You may want to check out this weekend’s Fall Arts & Crafts Sale at the Sedona Heritage Museum. The show is Saturday only at the Museum in Uptown Sedona. Doors are open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The show will be set up in the historic Jordan apple packing shed and surrounding park. This show is an old-fashioned arts and crafts show like you remember them to be. All items are hand-made. The artist or craftsman sits behind each table to personally tell you how they make their pieces, where they find their unusual materials or what inspires them. Many of these people only do this show or a very limited number of other shows making their items unusual and uncommon. They will have a large variety of handmade and one-of-a-kind offerings. At this show you will find fine art, ceramics, weavings, wood carvings and other wood art pieces, and quilts and home decor items of all kinds. Jewelers will show beaded, fused glass, and other original materials made into jewelry. Beautiful wearable art includes clothing, scarves, and accessories. Gifts galore including greeting cards, candles, hand-crafted soaps & lotions, and many, many other choices. Not all vendors take credit cards or out of town checks, so plan to bring cash if possible. This show has matured over the years to about 50 vendors, sold-out vendor space, and a large attendance. The Sedona Community Center will be serving lunch on the grounds, so your lunch purchase benefits another local non-profit. In addition to the arts and crafts booths, the Museum will hold a bake sale of only home-made goodies from 9:00 am until they are all gone! Disputes were often settled with blood and metal, when all was said and done." So says award-winning actor, playwright and historian Michael Peach in his new show, "Arizona History and Hi-Jinx" which will be performed every first Saturday at the Sedona Heritage Museum. Mike uses jokes, stories, first person narrative, and original cowboy poetry to explore quirky and mysterious events in Arizona’s colorful history. Cowboys and livestock, Hollywood, bootleggers, wildlife, and political chicanery are all featured as he spins tales of Arizona’s transition from territory to statehood. Informative, entertaining and family appropriate, Mike’s shows have long been a favorite of university, state and national parks, and historically-oriented audiences. Veteran's Day at the Museum
- The Sedona Heritage Museums annual Veterans Day Tribute will be on November 11th beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Museum. This event has become the communitys official Veterans Day event. The tribute will honor veterans and active service people. Veterans and active military members and their families will be honored guests, but residents are invited to come and meet and thank in-person those who served our country or continue to serve. The program begins with a Flag Ceremony presented by the Sedona Boy Scout Troop 48 & Cub Scouts. Featured speakers will be Mayor Sandy Moriarty, Yavapai County Supervisor Chip Davis, and Coconino County Supervisor Matt Ryan. USO-Style entertainment will fill the Museums historic shed when Tom and Shondra Jepperson take the stage to perform a mini show of songs that will honor veterans including several American classics. Vocalist Katherine LaTorraca will perform a patriotic music selection. Light lunch will be served by Museum volunteers, with the help of food host Jerona Java Cafe. Mata Ortiz Pottery with artist Oralia Lopez
- The Sedona Heritage Museum will host a history presentation and artist’s demonstration on Mata Ortiz pottery on Monday, November 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Artist Oralia Lopeza has set the standard in Mata Ortiz for finely executed geometric pottery designs and will be demonstrating her intricate painting skills. Some of her pottery will be available for sale at prices similar to direct prices in her village. John Bezy, geologist and co-author of "The Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz" has worked with the potters of Mata Ortiz for nearly 30 years. He will offer a presentation on the history, inspiration and appreciation of this unique regional art form. Mata Ortiz pottery developed in a small village in Chihuahua, Mexico, less than 100 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Traders from this ancient city greatly influenced the Anasazi, Hohokam, and Mogollon cultures of the Southwest. Pottery from this site was the inspiration for modern Mata Ortiz ceramics. Seen as a revival of an ancient Mesoamerican pottery tradition and based on 600 year old processes, materials, pigments, and designs, this pottery is considered art not craft. It has evolved from imitating pre-Hispanic designs to contemporary expressions by each individual potter or pottery family who produce distinctive individualized ware. Christmas In The Park
- The event extends free admission to the museum as a holiday gift to residents and guests. During the day visitors will be treated to hot apple cider, holiday cookies and free entertainment and activities. A fire will burn in the native stone fireplace of the old Jordan house and the museum will be decorated in vintage holiday decor. A tumbleweed 'snowman' will greet all visitors.Sedona old-timers and descendants of local pioneer families, including two of the Jordan children, Pat Schnebly Ceballos (Sedona’s granddaughter), and Patty Fox (ranch wife), will be in the Museum exhibit rooms telling stories about early Sedona. Guests are also invited to the activity room where volunteers will help them make a cornhusk doll ornament. A Christmas Carol, reading of a classic in a historic setting
- In celebration of the Christmas season, Michael Peach will give a reading of the Charles Dickens’ classic "A Christmas Carol" at the Sedona Heritage Museum on Saturday December 21 at 3:00 p.m. in the historic Jordan House. Encounters with the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future teach miserly Ebenezer Scrooge what it means to be human in this perennial holiday favorite. Guests will enjoy a fire in the Museum’s historic Jordan House red rock fireplace, as Peach gives this dramatic and inspiring dramatic narrative. Refreshments will be served. Peach is an award winning actor and playwright who loves history. A long-time fixture at the Museum, he performs a show of his original cowboy poetry and stories the first Saturday of every month.
