New Mexico State Fair
- New Mexico threw itself a state fair long before it was even considered a state. How's that for bold? After 121 years in business the fair still remains the biggest event in New Mexico. Held in the heart of Albuquerque on its permanent 236-acre grounds throughout the month of September, the fair features everything under the Southwestern sun. - Hot air balloons launch at dawn over the gypsum dune fields of White Sands National Monument and from various locations around the City of Alamogordo; balloon glow Saturday evening features 12-15 balloons at Alamogordo High School Tiger Stadium. International Balloon Fiesta
- Make plans to come to New Mexico for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta! Once a tiny gathering of 13 balloons in 1972, the fiesta has grown to become the largest balloon event in the world. You'll be one of hundreds of thousands of people who get up before dawn to watch the "Mass Ascension," close to 1,000 balloons defying gravity at once. It's nine day celebration of color and thrill honoring the world's oldest aviation sport. Don't miss the Discovery Center, an educational facility full of interactive exhibits, including a hot-air balloon basket where you can simulate flight. The historical display will show you the growth of this event over the years, the featured speakers will mesmerize you with their ballooning tales, and the tissue paper classes will teach you how to build your own hot air balloon.
