27 Above the Falling Waters Guided Hike - The ?Off the Beaten Path? Guided Hike Series continues with a hike along the Skyline Trail. But that?s only the beginning, this jaunt will leave the maintained route at the top of Hickory Nut Falls and travel upstream in search of wildlife and wild woods. 11 Old Growth Forest Guided Hike - This excursion will take participants off-trail and into one of the most scenic forests of Chimney Rock Park, where trees have reached ages of over 200 years and heights over 130 feet. Part of our ?Off the Beaten Path? Guided Hike Series, you?ll visit at least one state Champion tree and one tree with a trunk over 13 feet in circumference. Learn what defines an old-growth forest and see how it differs from most woodlands we see today. Moderately strenuous, with good walking shoes needed.

9 Botany on the Mountain Guided Hike - Continuing the 2006 ?Off the Beaten Path? Guided Hike Series with Park naturalist, Ron Lance, this outing will take guests to places along the Four Seasons Trail and then ?down slope? and off trail. This is a strenuous hike through rhododendron and steep slopes, about 2 miles over changing terrain. Hikers will get wonderful insight into various
aspects of plant identification, woods lore, plant edibility/toxicity, and natural history of an old forest, all in a memorable route of travel within the Park.

24 "Big Tree Bushwack" Guided Hike - View some of the largest tree specimens of the Park. Some of these trees avoided being cut in previous years by growing in difficult to reach places, so be prepared to part a lot of rhododendron branches and cross ravines and rocks to reach them. There are distances to negotiate as well, so be prepared for a strenuous walk of about three miles.Recommended for adventurous hikers age 16 & up.

1 Hawk Watch Guided Bird Hike - The 2007 ?Simon Says? series of guided bird walks continues. This weekend is usually the pea of the Broad-winged Hawk migration. Join ornithologist Simon Thompson to view large flocks, sometimes numbering as many as 500, can be seen soaring over the Park on their way to South America for the winter. 16 Fall Migration Guided Bird Walk - ?The 2006 Simon Says Series? of Guided Bird Walks continues. Hickory Nut Gorge is the annual stop-over for many winged visitors making their way south. Mixed flocks of tanagers, warblers and vireos move through the Gorge on their journey south.The hawk
migration every September and October is a spectacle not to be missed. More than 500 Broad-winged Hawks may be observed soaring together high in the sky. Smaller numbers of Sharp-shinned, Cooper?s and Red-shouldered Hawks also pass through.
