Monroe County History Bus Tour
- Learn more about Monroe County historic places. Take a school bus tour of historic sites in Monroe County - a county that's older than the state of Alabama. Tour Historic Sites not open to the public. The tour is designed to give teachers the opportunity to learn about historical events and sites that focus on early Alabama history, including the Indian Territory era, pioneer settlement, the significance of the Federal Road, mill towns, and steamboat traffic on the Alabama River. 1930s styled Harvest Hoedown
- As the heat of the summer growing season fades to the cool crispness of fall evenings, our attention turns to the bounty of the harvest in this still-rural community. The Monroe County Heritage Museum will be hosting a 1930s styled Harvest Hoedown. Travel back in time as the lawn surrounding the Old Courthouse becomes the setting for a simple Alabama county festival. Come in period dress to dance under the stars, or just stomp along, as our favorite regional band, Rollin’ in the Hay, stirs up the night air with the sounds of fiddle and banjo. Enjoy down-home food, such as, BBQ & Coleslaw, Smoked Ham & Biscuits, Macaroni & Cheese, Boiled Peanuts and Peach Cobbler, all washed down with Sweet Iced Tea. (Drink mixers will be provided). Fruitcake Festival
- Monroe County Heritage Museum will host the Annual Fruitcake Festival inspired by Truman Capote’s heart-warming Christmas Stories. Locally made fruitcakes, in specially designed tins, will be for sale all day Friday. A special theatrical performance brings Capote's stories to life at 7:00 pm Thursday and Friday in the world-famous courtroom of the Old Courthouse Museum. Tickets to the event are $10 and include a holiday reception … with fruitcake, of course! Decorating the Tree & One Christmas - a Capote Reading
- Families and children are invited to gather 'round the Christmas tree to make old-fashioned Christmas ornaments and paper-chain garland to decorate the tree. Immediately following at 7 p.m., join Everett Price for a reading of Truman Capote's semi-autobiographical story, "One Christmas," about Buddy who dreads leaving Alabama and his beloved Sook and dog Queenie, to visit his father for Christmas in New Orleans.
