October

28 Biblesta - Held the first Saturday in October in Humboldt, KS since 1957. This event features a parade with a biblical theme, gospel music throughout the day and evening, other activities, food and a free bean feed.

On the first Saturday in October each year, churches, clubs, businesses and individuals construct floats and/or portray events of the Bible. The entries are arranged in chronological order to provide a panorama of the Bible. One of the favorites, "Jonah and the Whale," has been a favorite. It has been retired from competition, but still is one of the entries in all but two years of the parade. This forty-foot float is one of the most fascinating to all visitors.

The Biblesta Parade was originated by Dr. Arthur Carlson who presented the idea to the Chamber of Commerce. It was launched as a totally non-commercial celebration, supported by the people of Humboldt. It continues to be an annual event. The name was coined by the late Vernon Hawver as appropriate for this observance based on the Bible and "Fiesta" words combined.

This is a community project, and the Biblesta Committee wishes to express appreciation to all the people of Humboldt for their financial and prayer support to make this parade possible. Recently, in the book called American Trivia, Humboldt is shown as the only place in America that you can see a parade with everyone in Biblical costumes. It is with great pride and honor that this community supports such an event - honoring our Lord and Savior. At the end of the festivities, with Christian music provided throughout the day, a free bean feed is provided. One thousand pounds of beans are prepared and served by volunteers of our local churches.

Trophies and cash awards are presented at the end of the day. There are seven categories designated in judging the floats: Grand Prize, Beauty, Drama, Spectacular, Authenticity, Walking, and Philip Doty Memorial Award. The money donated for the cash awards is with the stipulation that the funds be given to the field of missions.
