The Four State Farm Show
- Farmers and ranchers will explore more than 25 acres of agricultural technology and equipment at the 2017 Four State Farm Show near Pittsburg, Kansas. Set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Four State Farm Show has a 41-year legacy of providing the agricultural community with a hands-on look at the finest in goods and services. “We pride ourselves on delivering the kind of experience that benefits both farmers and agribusinesses,” said Ted Gum, Four State Farm Show coordinator and Farm Talk Newspaper publisher. “This is the place to learn more about what’s available to raise the efficiency bar in your operation.” But the Four State Farm Show is much more than just product displays. Extensive hay equipment demonstrations put a wide variety of implements to work under field conditions each day. Additionally, a lawn mower test-driving range will give qualified visitors the opportunity to operate the models of their choice. Visitors will also have the opportunity to win the Four State Farm Show Shopping Spree and shop the great deals at exhibitor booths. “We’ll give away $1,000 a day at the Farm Talk booth and $500 each day at the hay demonstrations,” Gum explained. Farm Show Dollars must be used for purchases with Four State Farm Show exhibitors. In its rich history, the Four State Farm Show has become a “Mall of Agriculture,” growing to nearly 700 booths covering over 25 acres. As always, parking and admission are free. Show hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Four State Farm Show grounds are located south of Pittsburg, Kansas, to the junction of Highways 400, 69 and K-171, then one-half mile east. Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Game
- The Kansas Shrine Bowl game will feature the state's best graduated high school football players, and will also feature many of the top high school band members and cheerleaders from across Kansas. Many Shrine Bowl players have gone on to stellar college careers, and some have starred in the NFL, including Gary Spani, Mike Bell, Paul Coffman, Barry Sanders, and Terrance Newman. The flagship of the Kansas Shrine Bowl since its inception is the East-West High School All-Star Football Game. Other events included, from time to time, are: Parade- The Shrine Bowl Parade, started in 1974, is the largest annual Shrine parade in Kansas. It features 70 to 140 Shrine Units from all 5 Kansas Shrine Centers. The Parade is lead by the 200 piece Kansas Masonic All-State High School Marching Band. Other elements of the Parade are the All-Star Football Players, the All-Star Cheer Squad, and the All-Star Cross Country runners. Hospital Screening Clinic- Children with a medical need, that is treaded at Shriners Hospitals for Children, are considered for admission and totally free treatment. The screening clinics are held to provide an opportunity for a child's parents to explore the possibilities; and the clinics provide an opportunity for the child to be examined by professional medical staff and help determine an admission recommendation. 2 Mile Charity Road Race- This race is open to all with 13 age categories in both genders. The race is run at the same time and on the same course with the Shrine Bowl All-Star Cross Country Teams. It finishes on the stadium track during the pre-game ceremonies of the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Game. Shrine Bowl Arts & Crafts Fair- This event is held one day only, the last Saturday in July, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open entries accepted for $30 booth space fee. Fun Walk- Held for the health conscious in a non-competitive atmosphere. Open to all, of all ages. No prizes or awards, just fun and exercise. $20 entry fee benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children. Kids Fair- Fun time activities for kids from 2 to 16 years of age. Held 11a.m. to 2 p.m. the last Saturday in July in the host city of the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl. Poker Run for Kids- For motorcycles, cars & trucks. Held 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. around the host city of the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl. Cash prizes and sponsor gifts. The events are produced by the Kansas Shrine Bowl to bring attention to the state's fine young talent, and to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Kansas children are treated free in Shriners Hospitals for Children regardless of the child's race, religion, nationality, creed, or relationship to a Shriner. Arma, Kansas Annual V-J Homecoming Celebration
- Arma puts its own twist on its annual homecoming celebration by paying tribute to those who serve our country. Arma is home to the Arma Veterans Memorial and the V-J Homecoming, started at the end of World War II after the Victory over Japan, to welcome the boy’s home. The event features arts and crafts, motorcycle show and competition, veteran’s parade, carnival and rides, and tractor pull. Homecoming is also home to Kansas' Largest Mud Volleyball Tournament. Little Balkans Days and PAACA Folklife Festival
- This is the largest Festival in Southeast Kansas. Labor Day weekend brings the celebration of the coal mining heritage back to life. The entire city of Pittsburg is filled with over 40,000 people celebrating the mixture of heritages and lifestyles. Activities throughout the city include golf tournaments, bocci, horseshoes, softball and volleyball tournaments, a vintage car display, 3 on 3 basketball ball tourney, Doo Dah Parade, and live Polka music for the evening street dance. Lincoln Park hosts a state sanctioned Chili Cook-off. Arts and craft booths fill the park along with ethnic food booths, allowing you to sample some mouth watering foods of the past. The Memorial Audorium is the place to be for "Joes' Place Speakeasy." Festa Italiana
- The Festa Italiana is a fund-raiser hosted by the Frontenac Education Foundation. The funds are used to provide scholarships for every graduate of Frontenac High School that attends a post-secondary school. Also, due to the great success of the project, some money is also being used for equipment and Grants in Frontenac schools. The Festa Italiana is held at the Raider Sports Complex once each fall. Festa provides a great opportunity for people to celebrate their heritage and show what made southeast Kansas what it is today. Many cooks and major vendors help out each year by providing food, prizes and live music for all. The different foods include traditional Italian, Mediterranean, French, Mexican, American, Greek, Slovenian, Italian-Cajun, Bohemian, German dishes among others. Nearly 3,000 people attend Festa yearly as the Foundation sets a money raising goal. Activities included more food samples than ever, Kids Zone where the varsity athletes work with the kids and do activities including face-painting, football toss and sand art, Mario's Market which features a silent auction, and a live auction. PSU Homecoming
- Thousands line the streets of Pittsburg for the biggest parade of the year featuring colorful floats, bands and the famous mascot- Gus Gorilla! Don't miss great NCAA Division II match up as the Forilla Football Team maintains their winning tradition. The weekend is full of fun activities. Call the University for more information. Tuesday, 7:00p - Gorilla Games - Part of the Homecoming activities at PSU. Student groups will compete in various messy, relay race games in order to earn points towards the Homecoming Sweepstakes Trophy. Yard Art sculptures by various campus groups will be on display each day throughout the week. Wednesday - 12:00 - 1:00 PM - (Stadium) At Convocation, King and Queen finalists are announced. Each student in attendance votes on King and Queen. The winners are announced and will begin their reign over the remaining Homecoming activities. In addition the Pride of the Plains Marching Band, Crimson & Gold Dancers and PSU Spirit Squad will provide entertainment. Thursday - 7:00 PM - (Stadium) Yell Like Hell is another in the series of events that make up Homecoming activities at PSU. Yell Like Hell is a competition between student groups to see who can do the best impression of the Crimson & Gold Dancers and PSU Spirit Squad. WinterFest of Lights
- A drive through display of over 1.7 million lights in Lincoln Park. Displays range from elaborate custom designs including a nativity, snowmen, Santa's elves and a glorious tunnel of 250,000 lights.
