Baldwin Art Walk Night - THIRD FRIDAY - JUNE - SEPT - Art Galleries, the Arts Council and local businesses invite everyone to spend the evening in downtown Baldwin City.

An evening of art and friendly conversation awaits from 6 to 9p.m. the third Friday night of each month from June to September. The Baldwin Community Arts Council sponsors Art Walk, which showcases paintings, sculpture, and quilting by area artists who set up on the street, in local galleries and in downtown businesses. Special event evenings also feature live music, art demonstrations, an Ice Cream Social in July and the Annual Cuppa Java in September during the art walks.

Farmers' Market - The Farmers' Market is open 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays from June through September in downtown Baldwin, next to the Post Office. There is also a Market on Wednesday nights from 5-8 pm in front of Antiques on the Prairie, 520 High St. Market features vary weekly, but often include a variety of seasonal vegetables, berries, and flowers as well as home baked breads, cakes, cookies and pies. Fresh eggs are also frequently offered.

5 - 27 The Un-Juried Art Exhibit - The Lumberyard Arts Center will present the "Un-Juried" Art Exhibit, opening the first Friday in January from 6 to 8pm and continuing during regular Gallery hours of 1 to 4 Tue. thru Fri. and Sat. 9am to noon. This is an eclectic collection of two dimensional pieces submitted by artists from the Baldwin City/Lawrence area. 10 Chocolate Auction - The annual Chocolate Auction features hundreds of chocolate delicacies, including cookies, pies, tortes and cream puffs, and also features many pieces of original art by area and regional artists. Bidders can begin with the silent auction and then bid in the live auction that follows. This event draws people from as far as Kansas City and Topeka. The auction began in 1987 with the Baldwin Community Arts Council which has now merged with the Lumberyard Arts Center. The Chocolate Auction tradition carries on and is now the major fundraiser for the Arts Center.

30 - 6 Midland Railway's Easter Egg Hunt Trains - Excursions Suspended. See the Easter Bunny on the Train, take an 11 mile round trip train ride and let your little ones hunt for over 1000+ Easter Eggs in the Park at Norwood, KS! Trains depart the Midland Railway Depot at 1515 High Street, Baldwin City, KS 66006 on the Saturday and Sunday the weekend before Easter and the Saturday before Easter.

Prizes will be awarded for the child finding the most eggs. The Easter Bunny will be aboard the trains to meet the children and anyone wishing to may have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny. Parents are also invited to bring along their own cameras and take pictures as well. After the hunt, the train will bring the participants back to the Midland Railway Depot in West Baldwin.

4 Black Jack Battlefield Opening Day - Visit the historic location of the Battle of Black Jack as tour season begins the first Saturday in May at 1pm! There will be a guided tour by John Brown of the battlefield and historical information behind John Brown, the Battle of Black Jack, Bleeding Kansas, and the role that the Santa Fe Trail played in the first battle of the Civil War. Tours will continue on Saturdays and Sundays until October. The battlefield and park is located 3 miles east of Baldwin City, KS and ¼ mile south of Highway 56 in rural Douglas County Kansas.

31 Black Jack Battlefield: Dawn Tour - There will be a guided tour of the Black Jack Battlefield on the date and at the time that the battle occurred 166 years earlier. Visitors should arrive not later than 4:45 a.m. that morning, consider bringing a flashlight, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for hiking. 5:00 a.m. - 7:00 a.m.

20 Battle of Black Jack Celebration - The commemoration of the Anniversary of the battle that was fought on June 2, 1856, will be on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Visit the Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park for a reenactment of the battle from 1:00 to 3:00, followed by music and games of black jack and poker. John Brown and other reenactors will be available to chat with! 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

​This event is free, but donations are accepted! There will also be food on site for purchase. We hope to see you there!

23 - 24 Smoke on the Bricks BBQ - The Baldwin City Recreation Commission welcomes you to the annual Smoke on the Bricks BBQ, powered by Rice Precision Manufacturing! This Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition is a qualifying event for the American Royal World Series of Barbecue and the Jack Daniels World Championship. Friday evening the general public is welcome to come out and hang with their friends and families for the evening from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Live music will be onsite, beer and wine will be for sale and be sure to purchase your BBQ Bucks to sample world class BBQ Friday evening!

Formal BBQ judging will begin on Saturday in the categories of chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. NEW this year, is the National Steak Championship! There are sausage and dessert categories again as well. Top 10 overall as well as top 10 in each category will win prize money, top 3 for each sausage and dessert. Total purse currently sits at $11,000.

KS0301001e002 - Baldwin City Midland Railway Railfest - Excursions Suspended. The Midland Railway of Baldwin City, KS will feature its classic railroading equipment during the annual Railfest weekend. The restored ex-M-K-T RS-3M #142 and ex-New York Central RS-3 #8255 will provide the locomotive power for the all-caboose, passenger, and mixed freight trains as they demonstrate these classic engines and rolling stock in action. Photo run-bys will be offered on all trips. All locomotives will be M-U'ed together on the final run each day.

If you have ever wanted to ride in the cab of a locomotive, then don't miss the chance to ride in
EX-CB&O NW-2 #524 (formerly #9227), which will be available for cab rides in the Baldwin yard when time permits between regular runs.

Railway Post Office Car in Operation

Restored Kansas City Southern R.P.O. car #30 will be featured on many of the trains and retired Railway Post Office Clerks will be on board to explain and demonstrate the functions of the Rail Post Office Car during Railfest. On Saturday only, there will be a U.S. Postal clerk on board to officially postmark passengers' letters with a 1-day only Baldwin City to Nowhere, KS R.P.O. commemorative cancellation stamp.

KS0301001e003 - Baldwin City Night Trains of Terrors - Excursions Suspended. Spooks, goblins, and all kinds of surprises are aboard the Midland Railway each October. Our cast of spooks and goblins will provide this special treat for the not-so-faint of heart of all ages during the weekends prior to Halloween.

An hour (or so) long train ride full of scares, spooks and frights! A dark walk through a moving train only lit by black lights!  Once you move through the train you will be guided through our Haunted baggage car full of frights just like in a haunted house while traveling down the rails in dark of night!  During your ride spooks and ghouls will walk through the train giving you a scare!  Watch your back....you never know when they may coming to get you! While traveling down the track, keep an eye out the windows of the train for other spooks and frights!  You might even see the headless horseman!

Haunted trains will run nightly the third Friday and Saturday through Halloween. Departures will be at 7:00, 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. nightly. Additional runs will be scheduled as needed. Group charters available by advance arrangement.

19 - 20KS0301001e004 - Baldwin City Maple Leaf Festival - Held the third full weekend in October, the annual Maple Leaf Festival is perhaps Baldwin City's largest community-wide activity. The idea for the festival was inspired by the city's hundreds of beautiful maple trees which form an umbrella of brilliant color over the city each fall, the area's rich history and the Santa Fe Trail.

Since the first festival, the celebration has been expanded to include new attractions each year. It will be kicked off with a parade at 11am on Saturday. There will be over 300 craft exhibits, quilt displays, performing arts, music, and food vendors at the event. Also, have more fun with Carnival rides, a kids' zone, a petting zoo, and much more. It will run Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-5pm.

The Midland Railway will provide excursion train rides every 2 hours - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m on Saturday and Sunday, departing from the historic Santa Fe Depot at 1515 W. High St, erected in 1906 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Please remember that companion animals are NOT allowed at the festival in accordance with Baldwin City Ordinance #1196. Violators will be fined.

19 Annual Maple Leaf Beer, Wine & Spirit Festival - Get ready Baldwin City! The annual Maple Leaf Beer, Wine & Spirit Festival is coming on Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will highlight some of the regions best Breweries, Wineries and Distilleries. Sullivan Square as well as High Street between 7th and 8th will be lined with vendors ready to share some of their best selections with you. In addition to beer, wine and spirit samples, musical performers will provide the soundtrack for this relaxing day, food trucks will be onsite with food for purchase and light appetizers will be available with your ticket.

19 Maple Leaf Gravel Grind - The annual Maple Leaf Gravel Grind will be an in-person ride offering 3 separate routes, a 16, 35 and 70 mile option that will highlight the beautiful fall foliage in and around Baldwin City, KS. Each rider will receive a custom medal and t-shirt included in their entry. All races will be timed by the Timer Guys. Ottawa Bike and Trail will once again be onsite offering light maintenance as well as swag for sale.

After the race stay around for our Annual Beer, Wine and Spirit Fest Event. Tickets will be discounted for Gravel Grind participants. You may purchase tickets the day of the event or purchase in advance.

Proceeds will be split between Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in Ottawa, KS and the Baldwin City Recreation Commission's scholarship fund.

30 Festival of Lights Parade - Turn out for the annual Festival of Lights Parade and tree lighting ceremony the first Saturday in December. Enjoy carolers, dancers and a light parade celebrating the season. The parade at 6pm runs through historic downtown Baldwin City and features Santa Claus making his grand entrance on an antique fire truck. 30 Candlelight Vespers - Come attend the annual Christmas Candlelight Vespers performed by students of Baker University. It will be held at First United Methodist Church on Eighth and Grove streets.
