The Fells, historic estate and garden on Lake Sunapee, is a non-profit 301 (5)(c)organization whose mission it is to preserve and share the Hay Family summer estate through education in history, horticulture and the environment. John Milton Hay, who purchased the property in 1891 was private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State under Roosevelt and McKinley. Three generations of Hay family summered at The Fells. The second generation, Clarence and his wife Alice, transformed The Fells into an exceptional American estate and working farm. They remodeled the 1891 cottage into a stately country home and transformed sheep pasture into terraced lawns and formal gardens. The Fells is open to the public seasonally and offers historic tours of the house and gardens.
