The Last Buffalo is a book by Bruce Roseland, published by The Institute for Regional Studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. It is a collection of poetry that records stories, observations and experiences of a fourth generation owner/operator of a ranch in central South Dakota who wants to preserve the culture of a lifestyle that seems in danger of fading away. The book's title is a metaphor comparing the demise of the wild buffalo to the dwindling rural population of central South Dakota, indeed, the whole of the upper midwest.
The Last Buffalo won the Wrangler Award for outstanding Book of Poetry for 2006, an award bestowed by The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK
A second book titled A Prairie Prayer is scheduled to be published in early 2008
by the same publisher. It is a continuation, thematically, of The Last Buffalo.
