This exhibition sets its sights on, under, and around tables in the Log House, the Stickley family home, and employs multi-sensory vignettes spotlighting the intentional and inextricable link between design and function in Stickley furniture. Style 1900: An Enduring Legacy, A Conversation with David Rago
- In marking the 30th Anniversary of the launch of Style 1900, David Rago, the magazine’s founder and founder of the Rago Arts and Auction Center, will join Mark Weaver, former writer for the magazine and current Stickley Museum Trustee, for a conversation exploring Style 1900’s history. From its beginnings as the black-and-white newsletter Arts and Crafts Quarterly, to its evolution into the full-color magazine Style 1900 and eventual decline, the magazine, like Gustav Stickley’s magazine The Craftsman, established itself as a guide to living and learning about the Arts and Crafts lifestyle. Early Newcomb Pottery from the Barbara and Henry Fuldner Collection
- This exhibition features a private collection of approximately 30 examples of early Newcomb Pottery within the dining room of the Log House—Gustav Stickley’s own home, which he not only designed, but also built and lived in from 1910-1917. The exhibition highlights the work of a dozen different designers from Newcomb Pottery, which was founded in 1895 as part of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the women’s coordinate of Tulane University in New Orleans. While Newcomb Pottery embodies its southern origin—decorators were encouraged to draw inspiration from their immediate surroundings—the designs demonstrate a thorough understanding of contemporary design reform principles such as conventionalized, repetitive motifs based on nature. This exhibition will complement the nearby Princeton University Art Museum exhibition Women, Art, and Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise (May 7 to July 10, 2016). Special Interest Tours: Early Newcomb Pottery Exhibition
- For an in-depth look at The Stickley Museum’s Early Newcomb Pottery exhibition, make plans to attend a Special Interest Tour, offered on multiple Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. Set in the rich visual context of Gustav Stickley’s own Log House dining room, Early Newcomb Pottery features 30 unique pieces produced pre-1915. The tour will delve into the rich history of Newcomb Pottery and examine the relationship between Newcomb Pottery and Stickley’s own Arts and Crafts enterprise through an exploration of specific pieces on view and the work of designers like Harriet Joor, who produced designs for both enterprises. This new series of quality children’s programs aims to educate and entertain young audiences about values Gustav Stickley held dear, like the value of home and our place in the natural world. Live Animal Show with Animal Experiences! Get up close and personal with animals in a fun and safe environment. This 30-minute show introduces children to wild, exotic and farm animals. Kids will learn about each animal, their natural habitat, and what we can do to protect their homes—they’ll even get to pet some of the animals! Each animal was rescued by Happy Tales Animal Sanctuary, given a loving, permanent home and has an amazing story that is sure to leave you with an ear-to-ear smile! Crafted Evenings: NOLA Night
- In honor of the rich history of Newcomb Pottery, which originated at Tulane University in New Orleans, the Stickley Museum will host NOLA Night on Saturday, June 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a party celebrating the singular tastes and sounds of the Big Easy. The evening will feature live jazz, Cajun-style heavy hors d’oeuvres, signature NOLA cocktails, and the museum’s special exhibition: Early Newcomb Pottery from the Barbara and Henry Fuldner Collection. Masks and beads will be provided! Before the party starts, guests who upgrade to the VIP package will be treated to an exclusive Inside the Exhibition panel discussion, featuring Barbara Fuldner, Marilee Meyer and Adrienne Spinozzi. The panel will provide an in-depth look into the development of the collection, the genesis of the exhibition, and the history and legacy of Newcomb Pottery. Free Open House at the Stickley Museum
- As part of the Museum’s annual gala weekend, the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms will suspend tours for the day to open for a Free Open House in Gustav Stickley’s Log House, built in 1911. Visitors are welcome to stroll the Log House at their own pace, experiencing both the standard furnishings and the new items in our special Newcomb Pottery exhibition. Trained museum docents will be available to provide information on the history of the house and its furnishings, and spotlight talks throughout the afternoon will highlight different aspects of the museum. All are welcome and no reservations are necessary! The Open House will also feature two book signings relating to the Newcomb Pottery exhibition.
