25 | ![]() The Dia de los Muertos Family Art Day is a free event. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.) From the time of the ancient Aztecs to the modern day, indiginous families have honored their ancestors through the creative arts, in festivitals, and through special preparations of food and flowers. The Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is traditionally celebrated as a time for deceased ancestors to return home and visit loved ones, feast on their favorite foods, and listen to their favorite music. Modern day Dia de los Muertos celebrations are festive and fun-filled remembrances of family and friends. In the home, family members traditionally honor their deceased ancestors with ofrendas (offerings) which are placed on an altar decorated for the Day of the Dead celebration to honor and please the returning souls. These are decorated with photographs, bread, foods, such as tamales, chicken in mole, and Day of the Dead candies, candles, flowers, toys, and other symbolic presents. These are all things which the families believe the souls enjoyed in their earthly existence. The Ellen Noël Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is always free.
