La Grange, Texas

La Grange was developed in 1831, located where the old buffalo trail later known as La Bahia Road crossed the Colorado River. in 1837 it became the seat of Fayette County. The county and town were said to be named by early settlers for their home town and county in Tennessee. The "Historic Oak" on the north side of the downtown square has been the muster point for men in six conflicts.

Selected as a Texas "Main Street" city, the downtown area of La Grange includes the 1890s courthouse (the first J. Reily Gordon-designed courthouse in Texas), the old county jail, the 1886 MKT Depot, historical markers, walking tours, and the St. James Episcopal Church, c. 1885. La Grange is a pivotal point on the Texas Independence Trail and Texas settlement trails. Czech, German, Antique and Cabin-styled bed and breakfast accommodations are available.
