Winter Nature Walk
- Join Joe Belanger, Friends of Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, Inc. Board Director, for a 2 hour guided nature walk leaving from the old refuge headquarters on Rt. 78, Swanton. Enjoy an informative couple of hours on the Maquam Creek/Black Creek nature trails and learn about wildlife species and refuge management programs. Meet at the kiosk behind the Old Refuge Headquarters building, Hwy. 78. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Woodcock Walk
- Join refuge volunteer Greg Simard for an informative stroll along a managed woodcock habitat area at the refuge. Woodcock arrive at the refuge in mid March and soon thereafter woodcock begin courtship displays over their singing grounds. Take this opportunity to learn about natural history and habitat requirements of the woodcock and possibly observe its unusual courtship display. Wear warm clothing, sturdy footwear and bring a flashlight along. Meet at parking area, opposite Stephen J. Young Marsh, on Tabor Road. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. International Migratory Bird Day
- Birdwatchers of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Annual Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge International Migratory Bird Day Count. Participants will be split into small teams to survey the refuge and adjacent areas by vehicle, foot, canoe, and motorboat depending on interests and abilities. Bring your binoculars and field guides. Dress appropriately for the weather and expect that the ground will be wet. Waterproof boots are advised. Following the count, participants will reassemble at the refuge headquarters to tally the numbers and eat lunch. Meet at Refuge Headquarters/Visitor Center, Tabor Rd.
