Aquilla Lake Fishing

category : Fishing
Largemouth bass fishing can be excellent on Aquilla. The combination of stained water, ample heavy cover, and light fishing pressure means plenty of big bass to catch. Fish spinner baits, jig and pork combos, and plastic worms in and around heavy cover. Tree lines, fence rows, and creek channels are good places to start. Crappie are usually found on submerged brush piles and large isolated trees. Live minnows seem to be the preferred bait. Catfish are caught drift fishing flats or on trotlines set around shallow, brushy areas. Shad, cut bait, or blood bait will all work. White bass are caught trolling small tail spinners, jigs, and spoons across windy flats.

Fishing Cover/Structure

Both the Hackberry and Aquilla Creek arms are loaded with standing timber and brush. The main pool close to the dam is mostly devoid of timber. A word of caution: when navigating up the creek arms of the lake, watch for large tree stumps just under the water!

The lake has two boat ramps. Both areas have restrooms and abundant parking. For details, choose a point on the map or a name in the chart below. A free public fishing pier is located at the Tailrace below the dam. Bait is available at Burger Shack Cafe Bait & Tackle (254/582-1266) located between Hillsboro and Whitney at the corner of State Highway 22 and FM 1947.
